The Coronation Clock Tower, Surbiton

The specialist work to repair and restore the prominent 18 metre high Clock Tower in Surbiton Town Centre is set to be unveiled during October.

The Grade II listed Clock Tower, which was completed in 1908 to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII, was found to be in need of repair last summer when scaffolding was erected to facilitate repairs to the clock faces. The work has included repairs to a large number of the stone ornamentations and fixings which were damaged as well as the restoration of the original weather vane.

The Council was successful in obtaining a grant of £3,000 from Heritage for London and £10,000 from English Heritage – the most that could be achieved, given the funds they have available. Whilst more funding is required, English Heritage are impressed with the project and the Council have been invited to apply for English Heritage Lottery funding for a Phase 2 works, which would include replacing the original statues and railings featured in the photos taken in 1908.A plaque giving information giving information on the history of the Clock Tower is also planned

A local community group Friends of the Coronation Clock Tower are actively seeking further opportunities for grant aid, sponsorship, and ways of raising funds and donations for the works and to fund ongoing maintenance costs. They will also be involved in arranging a special event to celebrate the Centenary of the Clock Tower in 2008.
